For Elba

by Clinton Inman

Pale would be the waters

                                           That reflect only skies

And grace not the splendor

                                           Of your enchanting eyes.

Pale would be the moon

                                           That only marks its pace

And fails to look down upon

                                           Your much fairer face.

Yet paler would be the poet

                                           Whose words cannot express

One word to match your smile

                                           Or something deeper no less.

Born in Walton-on-Thames, England, Clinton Inman graduated from San Diego State University. A teacher all his life, Inman recently retired from the Tampa Bay area where he lives with his wife, Elba.
